Compelling Question: What are the best practices to increase reading achievement in upper elementary students?
In the school where I currently teach, reading is the main focus. I teach in a Title 1 school where over 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. More than half of our students go home to non-English speaking households. Of our total student population more than half are reading below grade level. I want to learn the best techniques of how to help struggling readers. When I began the New Literacies and Global Learning program I wanted to learn how to increase reading achievement for all of my diverse students and to meet their differentiated literacy needs. I was interested in learning and implementing the best research based practices in an upper elementary reading classroom. Throughout the program I was able to complete research on student motivation, reading fluency, technology integration and literature circles. After completion of my research I have learned there are many research based strategies a teacher can use to increase reading achievement in their classrooms. In the next few pages you will read about the various strategies I implemented and the results from each. The common outcome I discovered was an increase of time in text. Each strategy used and research completed had the students spending more time reading their texts. Here is the culmination of my research during this program.
